Mike Jones
Your Life Progress Guide Traveling Photographer

Back Next

Hi, I'm Mike Jones, and I've been working as a photographer for the past 16 years. Photography started as just a hobby. Shortly after graduating high school, I found a job as staff photographer for a small weekly newspaper in northern New Jersey. After a couple of years I decided that I absolutely loved it and switched my college major to photography. A couple of years later, I moved to south Jersey and worked for The Coast Star, a much larger newspaper that covered a beautiful area of the Jersey Shore. There's no better way to master photography than shooting for a newspaper. On any given day I'm shooting portraits, sports, architecture, breaking news, and boring crap that I need to somehow take in interesting photo of. When nothing else was happening, I got to shoot pretty scenic shots to fill space in the paper. Landscape photography has always been my true love. In year 2000, I left the Coast Star to pursue a freelance career. Shortly afterward, I took a 3 month camping trip around the country. I visited 18 national parks on that trip, and it truly changed my life. After seeing just how much was out there, I didn't want to live in New Jersey anymore.

Last year I came to the conclusion that I could make as much money while I travelled, as I was making in New Jersey. When I realized that my house was worth nearly four times what I paid, I sold it and bought a huge motor home. So, I have finally fulfilled my lifelong goal of being a homeless guy with no job. It's been a little over a year now and I have to say I absolutely love living in a motor home. The retired snowbirds have the right idea. I've been following the nice weather for over a year now. Last winter I spent 4 months in Florida. Summer 2006 I spent 4 months in Maine and Canada. When it was 103 degrees in New Jersey this august I was in Canada where it was 70 degrees. Last winter when it was 15 degrees in New Jersey, I was in Key Largo where it was 70 degrees.

So, that's my story. I'm a homeless drifter. I wander around the country in a huge motor home with my two Labrador Retrievers. I live in campgrounds, and I'm always looking for friends with big driveways to park in for a few nights. I shoot pictures, and try to sell them and hopefully make enough money to eat.
