Philip Sobul’s beguiling new book, “Conscious Awakening: The Liberation of a Moonie and the Liberation of Humanity” (published by AuthorHouse), can most definitely be classified as an exploration of spirituality. But, unlike most books of its kind, “Conscious Awakening” is not a flat, academic catalogue of spiritual inquiry. Instead, it is a moving account of individual enlightenment and its impact on society.
From the author’s earliest memories, he was always looking for something more in life: As a kid, I developed a sense of longing for something real, something true. As a matter of fact, as I was dating in my youth, I would always chase girls away simply because I was too serious about the relationship at a young age. So there was something inside of me that was longing for—I don’t know what you would call it; true love or a meaning or a purpose in life—something more than I felt in my family. Sobul found that “something more” in spiritual exploration, embarking on a lifetime of study and practice of both Western and Eastern spirituality, including Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism, Zen, and mystic Christianity. After years of devotion and service, Sobul received direct inspiration to begin writing “Conscious Awakening.” The inspiration was born out of a startling moment of awakening in which Sobul received a dharma transmission from a Korean Zen and Taoist master and teacher in Nov. 2005. After this encounter, Sobul’s conscious and spiritual energy levels were elevated to an almost nirvanic level, and he began writing down the story of his journey to true spiritual awakening. “Conscious Awakening” allows him to share the many lessons and insights he was made privy to.
While the lessons in “Conscious Awakening” are universal, Sobul says that his book is especially appealing to those who have an interest in spirituality, religion, yoga or meditation, as well as those interested in alternative healing modalities such as Qigong or Reiki.
